Several news websites and verified Twitter accounts have been sharing a video claiming that it shows the Taliban hanging a man from a helicopter, however, fake news investigators have shown that the man is alive and well and the video may show an attempt to fix a flag over a public building.

BBC journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh, who investigates online disinformation tweeted: “A viral video claiming to show a man being brutally hanged from a helicopter in Kandahar was likely an attempt to fix a flag over a public building, not a hanging. A separate video of the incident shows the man is clearly alive and waving in the air.”

The video shows the man wearing a harness and waving but that didn’t stop several people, including Senator Ted Cruz to falsely claim that the Taliban hanged a man from a US Blackhawk helicopter.

Senator Ted Cruz used the fake video to criticise Joe Biden for his role in Afghanistan. The fake video has been viewed over 2.2 million times, showing how easy it is to fall for online disinformation.

US Rep. Dan Crenshaw also shared the video, asking: “In what f***ing world was it a good idea to just hand over a country to these people.”

Even QAnon conspiracy theorist and pastor Greg Locke tweeted: “The Taliban is literally hanging people from American helicopters that Biden gave them. Anyone still supporting this fraudulent fool is either lying or is straight up evil.”

It appeared that US President Joe Biden was the target of this online disinformation campaign.
