Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican who has expressed racist views and touted support for baseless Qanon conspiracy theories in numerous online videos, has become the first supporter of the far-right conspiracy to win a US House seat representing northwest Georgia.
Greene, a Republican businesswoman, was announced the winner in Georgia’s 14th congressional district, the AP reported. Greene’s Democratic opponent, Kevin Van Ausdal, had dropped out of the race in September, saying he was moving out of state.
Her candidacy was strengthened by the endorsement of President Donald Trump, who has called her a “future Republican Star.”
In a Facebook livestream, Greene expressed her gratitude towards her staff and urged her supporters to pray for Trump’s victory. She also pledged to “fight hard to make sure that Nancy Pelosi and the squad and the radical Democrats in the House do not steal anything away from America, because this country was never ever meant to be a socialist nation.”
The future congresswoman has been criticized for racist and bigoted remarks, such as Black and Hispanic men are being held back by “gangs and dealing drugs,” alleged an “Islamic invasion” of government offices and accused Jewish billionaire George Soros of collaborating with Nazis. In some videos, obtained by Politico, she seemed to be in support of barring Muslims from serving in the US government and comparing Black Lives Matter to the Ku Klux Klan.
She has also voiced her support Qanon, a far-right conspiracy theory which falsely claims that Donald Trump is secretly fighting against a cabal of Democrats, billionaires and celebrities who are part of a child trafficking ring and worship Satan. They also claim that Trump feigned conspiracy with Russians to enlist Robert Mueller to join him in exposing the sex-trafficking ring and preventing a coup d’état by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and George Soros amongst other high profile names. The group also alleges that a life-extending chemical is harvested from the blood of abused children by the aforementioned ‘villains’, as they are viewed in Qanon’s alternative reality.
The FBI has labelled the movement as a potential domestic terrorism threat, and it has continually inspired vigilante violence.
“Congratulations to future Republican Star Marjorie Taylor Greene on a big Congressional primary win in Georgia against a very tough and smart opponent,” Trump tweeted after her primary win. “Marjorie is strong on everything and never gives up – a real WINNER!”
