Erin Perrine, one of the leading aides to US President Donald Trump, has criticised Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for not catching COVID-19.

On Thursday, Trump revealed that he and his wife Melania had tested positive for COVID-19, and would continue working within the White House during their quarantine period.

Trump was transferred to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre over the weekend, where he received further treatment after developing a high fever and experiencing a drop in his oxygen levels.

Speaking on Fox News on Monday, Ms Perrine, the communications director of the Trump 2020 campaign, stated: ‘Listen, [Trump] has experience as commander in chief. He has experience as a businessman. He has experience now, fighting the coronavirus as an individual.

‘Those first-hand experiences, Joe Biden, he doesn’t have those.’

Moments earlier, Ms Perrine had argued that Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis reinforced his claim to be re-elected to the White House on November 3.

The 74-year-old’s aide stated: ‘The President has coronavirus right now. He is battling it now head on, as toughly as only President Trump can.

‘And of course that is going to change the way he speaks of it, via firsthand experience. That experience of not only coronavirus but being President of the United States, that’s why you just see a different tone overall from him.’

Ms Perrine has hit back at coverage of remarks, taking to Twitter to post: ‘Dem operative takes 12 seconds of my answer out of context and “journalists” go wild.

Clearly the point I was making is that first-hand experience changes the way any individual talks about or relates to something.
