LONDON: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged the U.S. to lift its travel ban on EU travellers, saying “this must not drag on for weeks.”
The pressure has been mounting on President Biden to rescind the travel ban put in place by the Trump administration in March 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The EU president further added the U.S. to its list of safe countries in June and the U.K. has allowed vaccinated Americans to enter the country since 2 August.
The widespread rise of the Delta variant is the reason why the White House has not yet given a date for when it plans to reopen travel with the EU or the U.K.–whilst there are economic and heartfelt reasons to support the reopening of transatlantic borders, there are fears for the continued spread of infections, particularly across U.S. states with low vaccination rates.
