KABUL: At least 13 people have been killed after two bombs exploded near Kabul Airport, a Taliban spokesperson has confirmed.
The first blast was reported to occur at the Abbey Gate of Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport while the second bomb went off near the Baron Hotel which is just a short distance from the Abbey Gate.
Initial findings suggest that this was a suicide attack and the casualties may increase.
US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the attack.
Earlier, various countries including the US and the UK advised their citizens to avoid travelling to the airport due to credible intelligence regarding the likelihood of an attack in Kabul Airport.
Tolo News reporter Ziar Khan Yaad tweeted that more than 30 patients had arrived at Kabul Surgical Centre while six people were pronounced dead on arrival.
It has been speculated that this attack was carried by ISIS-K, the Khorasan group of the Islamic State.
Videos showing the aftermath of the attack show a large number of casualties.
À tous nos amis afghans : si vous êtes près des portes de l’aéroport, éloignez-vous de toute urgence et mettez-vous à l’abri. Une deuxième explosion est possible.— David Martinon (@david_martinon) August 26, 2021
