An investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism revealed that intelligence official Adib Ahmad Fahim, the son of the late General Mohammad Qasim Fahim had a large financial stake in Pamir Airways. An uncle of Fahim’s was also a major shareholder in Kabul Bank which suffered a huge scandal of systematically granting insider loans. Kabul Bank collapsed in 2010.

Hamid Karzai’s brother, Mahmood Karzai was also a shareholder in Kabul Bank. It has been reported that Mahmood Karzai used his influence to protect Kabul Bank from scrutiny over its allegedly shady insider loans.

Mahmood Karzai had confirmed that he owned a property in Dubai but denied that he had engaged in corruption.

More recently, the Russian Embassy in Kabul revealed that former Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani fled the country, taking a surreal amount of cash which was filled in 3 cars and a helicopter. Moscow claims that Ghani had taken so much cash that some of it had to be left behind due to space constraints.

Fatima Rabbani, the daughter of former Afghan leader Burhanuddin Rabbani also owned various businesses in Dubai including a posh restaurant as well as luxury goods business. Records seen by The Bureau reveal that Fatima Rabbani had a business partner, who is the niece of Sayed Mohammad Gailani, Afghanistan’s former Ambassador to Jordan.

Distinct voices, including that of former Afghan President Hamid Karzai have alleged that the United States fuelled the pandemic of corruption in Afghanistan.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Karzai stated that hundreds of millions of dollars from the US flowed into the hands of private contractors and security firms, fostering corruption.
