ABU DHABI: Former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has said that those who think he fled Afghanistan should not judge him if they do not know the actual reasons.

Ghani released the video message on Wednesday from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which earlier confirmed it was hosting him “on humanitarian grounds.”

While speaking to the nation and the world for the first time since fleeing the country following the capture of Kabul by the Taliban, Ghani said that he will return back to Afghanistan to continue his duty.

The former president addressed accusations and rumours that he had taken a lot of money before his departure from the presidential palace, calling them “complete lies and baseless.” Ghani said that he left Afghanistan with one pair of clothes and flippers.

Ghani further added that he was flown out of Kabul to avoid bloodshed. In past, many Afghan rulers have had left Afghanistan and returned. Talks with the Taliban should continue.

“I wanted to transfer power to the Taliban peacefully but I was expelled from Afghanistan against my will,” former President Ashraf Ghani said.

He also alleged that his assassination was planned.
