New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation after the findings of an independent investigation into sexual harassment allegations against him.

Cuomo, a Democrat who had served since 2011 as governor of New York, announced after New York Attorney General released the results of a five-month independent investigation that stated Cuomo had engaged in conduct that violated US and state laws.

The investigation found that Cuomo groped, kissed or made suggestive comments to women including current and former government workers – one a state trooper – and retaliated against at least one woman who accused him of sexual misconduct.

Meanwhile, Cuomo denied all the allegations.

Cuomo’s resignation will be effective in 14 days and his successor would be Lieutenant Governor and Democrat Kathy Hochul, who will be the first woman to assume the post.

After months of calling for Cuomo’s resignation, Twitter users show similar responses.

Letitia James, the attorney general, who has been accused by Ms Glavin of conducting an unfair investigation, said the resignation “closes a sad chapter for all of New York, but it’s an important step towards justice.”

Other users pointed out the grim reality that it took assault charges for a female to finally hold office as governor in New York.

Andrew Cuomo assumed office as the 56th Governor of New York in 2011. He was re-elected to the post in 2018. His father, Mario Cuomo, had also held the position of governor for three terms.

He graduated from Fordham University in the Bronx in 1979 and received his law degree from Albany Law School in 1982.

Cuomo has served as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Community Planning and Development from 1993 to 1997. From 1997 to 2001, he served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in former President Bill Clinton’s Cabinet.

Cuomo has also served as Attorney General of New York.
